Programs
Black History Month
The Black Cultural Center (BCC) plans and coordinates several campus-wide activities and programs (e.g. convocations, summits, plays and lectures) throughout February. These activities pay tribute to Berea College alum Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Father of Black History. They also honor the history, heritage and contributions of African Americans as part of our commitment to interracial education.
Orientation Activities
During the Registration and Orientation Weekend in the summer and throughout the school year, the BCC provides information and updates about programs and services offered through the Center. The BCC also provides leadership in Orientation Activities designed to enhance Berea College’s commitment to interracial education and other ideals of our global society. During this weekend, the entire campus community is invited to Experience Community during the week of orientation. The Community Mixer is held during Orientation Week. This informal gathering welcomes and introduces new students to faculty, staff, students, community members and the Black Cultural Center staff.
Sankofa Scholars Program
The Sankofa Scholars Program is open to all students and supports their transition to Berea College, aiming to enhance retention and graduation rates. The program offers academic and professional skill-building sessions, service-learning opportunities, and is set to introduce a career cluster initiative that will involve Berea alumni. Currently, approximately 20 students actively participate in this impactful program. Benefits of participating in the program as a Sankofa Scholar include:
Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is an African American holiday celebrated from December 26 through January 1. It is a celebration of family, community and culture. The BCC usually celebrates Kwanzaa prior to the end of the fall semester, incorporating all of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. The celebration is open to the campus community.
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Program
The BCC commemorates the birth and legacy of Dr. King with a worship and praise service, unity march to City Hall, convocation and community luncheon. Open to all students, staff, faculty and Berea community members.
