Weatherford-Hammond Prize

The Weatherford-Hammond Prize in Appalachian Literature was established in 1968 to encourage students to read about Appalachia and to promote the understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage of the Appalachian Mountains. It is awarded to the student who submitted the best essay or research paper relating to the Appalachian Region based on scholarship use of the Weatherford-Hammond Mountain Collection in Hutchins Library’s Special Collection & Archives and/or other primary resources.

2017: Julie Nelms for her research paper “How Can I Keep From Singing”

2018: Emily Masters for her research paper “Uncovering the Memory of the Highland Folk School”

2019: Rhea Carter for her research paper “What was Left Behind”

2021: Takudzwa T. Mabvuta for his research paper “Missy n’ Mammy”
