Engineering Technologies and Applied Design
Build your future. The Engineering Technologies and Applied Design (ETAD) department provides students with a broad technological and design-centered education with a unique liberal arts foundation. The dynamic and relevant curriculum engages students in research, design and production while emphasizing sustainable practices. Through practical, hands-on experiences that align with contemporary industry standards, the department strives to cultivate critical and creative problem-solvers with the capabilities to identify, analyze and implement design solutions as responsible citizens of the world.
Students can major in one core degree in ETAD. Coursework includes Appalachian crafts, architecture, computer integrated manufacturing, construction, design, electronics, energy and power systems, quality control and even woodworking, among others.
Opportunities & Internships
The ETAD department actively seeks new opportunities for students through internships and study abroad programs. The experiences have varied greatly as we seek to actively reflect student interests. Internships have ranged from small, local businesses to large, international corporations. Companies have included Big Ass Fans, Hitachi Astemo Americas, Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Link-Belt Cranes, R.J. Corman Railroad Group, Tebco of Kentucky, Inc., Toyotetsu American and Trane Technologies and more.
In addition, students have studied abroad in countries like China, Costa Rica, Egypt, Honduras, India, Ireland, Japan and Spain.
Up to 30 student workers are employed by the ETAD department to assist with laboratory maintenance, class setup, creative projects and applied research.
Careers & Outcomes
Our students have chosen a variety of career paths after leaving Berea College, including design engineering, education, entrepreneurship, graduate school, graphic artistry, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, metal working and welding, photography, production management, quality control and sustainable development.
I’ve experienced really mentoring us to allow us to learn on the equipment ourselves with first-hand experience. As a teaching assistant and lab assistant for the woods lab, I’ve seen students come in [with] limited to no experience with a lot of this equipment...but our teachers just take us through and guide us on all the steps and procedures. By the end of the semester, they can’t get us out of the lab. We are so excited to get into here and work with all this equipment.
