Thank you for your interest in making a gift in kind to Berea College. We appreciate your generosity. As the College considers acceptance of gifts in kind, we do so with an eye toward ensuring the best possible stewardship of resources.
For an explanation of our gift in kind acceptance processes, please see below.
Gifts in kind to Berea College are donations of tangible property. If you would like to discuss a potential gift in kind to Berea College, please complete the form below. Berea College staff will contact the relevant campus department to ensure that a proposed gift in kind can indeed be used to benefit Berea students, and that the department has adequate resources to properly store, maintain, and use the intended gift. This is done to ensure that Berea’s campus community is able to use such gifts as the donor intended as well as steward College resources in the best way possible. Staff will follow up with you to communicate our progress in this process and ask any additional questions.
All items are considered on a case-by-case basis. However, examples of prior gifts in kind include historically and artistically significant works of art, rare and historic books and other archival items, Appalachian cultural artifacts, and musical instruments in good condition.
The Berea College Gift Acceptance Policy states that, in general, the College will not accept gifts in kind in cases where acceptance of those gifts will cause the College to incur costs. The most frequent example of such a cost is shipping of a gift in kind. In some cases, donors offer to cover such fees. Campus departments may also elect to absorb more modest shipping costs on case-by-case basis.
Gifts in kind that would require the College to incur significant and recurring maintenance expenses are another example.
Depending on the value of the gift in kind, additional documentation may be required for the College to provide a tax receipt. Generally, these stipulations apply to gifts valued at $5,000 or more. Please note that IRS rules prevent the College from determining the value of a potential gift in kind.
For gifts in kind valued at less than $5,000, the donor may simply provide the College with a gift value. For gifts valued at more than $5,000, the IRS requires the donor to provide, at their own expense, an appraisal by a qualified appraiser. Additional documentation may be necessary for higher values. Donors are advised to consult a financial advisor about any tax related questions.
