Student Government Association

We, the students of Berea College, unite to represent student opinion and voice among faculty, administration, staff, and each other by combining our talents and diversities. Understanding the importance of promoting student welfare, representing student concerns and opinions, protecting the best interests of students, and fostering communication among the aforementioned groups, we resolve to work toward the benefit of the Student Body. In all these means, we strive to remember the traditional ideals of the Great Commitments of Berea College as they apply to the Student Body, thus establishing the Berea College Student Government Association.

The Student Government Association of Berea College is made up of three governing bodies- the Senate, the Board of Residents, and an Executive Council. House Councils and Student Representatives to Faculty Committees are also contained within SGA's reach. SGA's offices are located on the ground floor of the Alumni Building (next to the Activities Room).

Mountain Day

In addition to their weekly programs and oversight, the Office of Student Involvement & Engagement is responsible for the planning and hosting of Berea College's annual Mountain Day. A tradition that began in 1875, the Mountain Day celebration serves as an example of Berea’s mission to serve the Appalachian region and its people. Berea College celebrates Mountain Day on the third Wednesday in October. The celebration of Mountain Day involves hiking up the Indian Fort Mountain, which is located within the seven thousand acres of College’s forest territory.  Students are encouraged to hike up to the East Pinnacle before the sunrise, in order to greet the sunrise atop the mountain.  In recent years, it has been a tradition for several college organizations or clubs, such as the Berea College Choir and the Country Dancers to sing or perform dances respectively upon the rise of the Sun. Learn more about Mountain Day here.
