Woodson and Hurst Scholars

Whether you’ve realized it or not, Berea College has impacted your life in two distinct ways…

The founder of Black History Month and inventor of touchscreen technology are both Berea alums.

We need your help nominating the best and brightest juniors for our Woodson & Hurst Scholars Programs!

Woodson Scholars

Eligibility for Woodson Scholars: African American juniors who are active in their community, school, civic, and/or church organizations, demonstrate financial need, and have a cumulative (unweighted) high school GPA of 3.4 or higher are eligible for this award.

Recipients will receive:

  • A personalized award.
  • Press release to share with local news media.
  • A special, personalized campus-visit opportunity.
  • Free laptop when students arrive on-campus their first semester.
  • Plus, the promise of never paying tuition at Berea College. A value of more than $190,000 over four years.

Hurst Scholars

Eligibility for Hurst Scholars: High School juniors who will be exceptional First-Generation College Students, with resilience, perseverance and grit, demonstrate financial need, and have a cumulative (unweighted) high school GPA of 3.4 or higher are eligible for this award.

Recipients will receive:

  • A personalized award.
  • Press release to share with local news media.
  • A special, personalized campus-visit opportunity.
  • Free laptop when students arrive on-campus their first semester.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson

Dr. Carter Goodwin Woodson, Berea College Class of 1903, is known worldwide as the “Father of Black History.” His legacy exemplifies Berea’s centuries-old commitment to interracial education.

Dr. Samuel Hurst

The father of one-atom physics and the inventor of today’s omnipresent touch screen technology, Dr. G. Samuel Hurst, Berea College Class of 1947, let curiosity lead him. He created a technological revolution that has changed the way we interact with our world.
